Pauline's Reviews of Vacation Rentals in England

Over the years we have rented many cottages in England, and looked at many others. This page has my reviews. Keep in mind that we selected cottages with a phone line or broadband for internet access. This limited our choice since the majority of cottages do not have non pay-box phones or broadband. (We no longer have this restriction for shorter vacations because I use my BlackBerry to connect my computer to the Internet, although this does not always work because cell phone coverage in the Cotswolds is spotty.)

Coming soon: I will post photos of these cottages in our Cotswolds Photo Gallery.

Reviews of Cotswold Vacation Rentals (Holiday Cottages)

Bruern Cottages (estate): Recommended. Luxury cottages on an estate near Stow-on-the-Wold. We drove onto this estate (May 2005) and have talked to people who rented here. They are highly priced but the estate is lovely, location is very good and I heard the cottages are very nice.

Eastview (owner), Nailsworth: Recommended. 2bed/2bath semi-detached cottage on three levels in older neighborhood on the northern edge of Nailsworth. We spent two months here January - February 2008. Comfortably furnished. Great location: walk into Nailsworth shops in 15 minutes, many hiking trails from the cottage, great hiking area. (sleeps 4 - £750/week high season)

No 1 Trap House Court (owner), Minchinhampton: Recommended. 1bed/1bath row house in the center of Minchinhampton. We did not stay here, but the owner showed us the cottage in February 2008. The building is brand new, but built in the character of the village. It is small and does not have an outside area, but would be perfect for a week in Minch. Apartment is on two levels, up one level from the street, in a quiet courtyard. Phone Sally David +44-(0)1453-885-171.

Jasmine Cottage (Rural Retreats), Windrush: Recommended. 2bed/1bath (sleeps 3), semi-detached row house in a small village (no shops) near Burford. Very comfortable cottage. We spent 2 1/2 weeks here in May 2005.

Sansome Cottage (owner), Ilmington: Recommended. 2bed/2bath cottage on grounds of owner's house in Illmington, a village in the northern Cotswolds 10 minutes drive from Chipping Campden. Top quality furnishings, spacious cottage on two levels, large and beautiful kitchen, broadband. (sleeps 4 - £630/week high season) We did not stay here but had a tour of the cottage in May 2005.

Sudley Castle Cottages, Winchcombe: Not recommended. Fantastic location but the people running the cottages don't really care about them. Maybe for a weekend stay or one week if you really want to be in this area. We spent a month there in September 2004.

Well Farm Plough Cottage (Rural Retreats), Painswick: Recommended. Three cottages on an estate on the hillside above Painswick. We spent a month here in May 2000. Rented through Rural Retreats, so they are pricy for a small cottage, but the quality is good and the owners are very nice. We were in Plough Cottage, 1bed/1bath. (sleeps 2 - £578/week high season)

Rest of England

Salisbury Apartment (Hideaways): Not recommended. The apartment was nice but was over a carpet shop and the balcony overlooked a parking area (the shop employees stand under the balcony smoking). We spent a week there in Ma 2005. Because of this experience, I do not assume that all listings from Hideaways are good.
